Dishin’ For ARTE & Books

Friday night, it was an opening of ARTEs Hispanic-themed exhibit at 900 Chapel St. Saturday, it was the grand opening public reception for a stunning new library branch in the Hill neighborhood. Gone Dishin’ was at both, and she took photos.

Danny Diaz and Dave Greco had a dream and translated it into a reality! Through their passion and diligence, they have finally given New Haven a recognition of Hispanic Heritage that reflects the importance of their community to the city, the state and the nation. Their collaboration has resulted in an exhibit at 900 Chapel St. that should not be missed!

Tabaca, Cana and Cafe trace the commodities, their origins and influence on various Latin American countries and the migration of Latinos to Connecticut. It is so incredibly well curated and mounted that seeing and studying it should be an academic and social requirement. There are enough props and whimsy to make it fun. Friday night’s opening celebration was replete with actors, musicians and fabulous food.

The dynamic duo has garnered the support of the exhibit’s host, David Nyberg, along with an astounding group of sponsors: the Knights of Columbus is responsible for funding the exhibit, making it free to all to explore and enjoy.

The future events that will surround this centerpiece, many of which are also free of charge, are Arts Road Trip IV, travelling to the Hispanic Society of American in New York, on September 23, followed by two Coffee Talks on Sept. 28th and 30th (at Las Casa Cultural at Yale and the Knights of Columbus Museum), a Latino Cooking Demo and Party on October 5 at Pacifico, performances of The Wake of Pedro Urdemalas, October 6,7, and 8, performed by Teatro del Sol y de la Luna (at Strong School), Cooking Lessons at Casa Otonal on October 8, TangolLessons at ECA on Oct. 15, and the 3rd Annual Scholarship Awards Reception on Oct. 19 at 900 Chapel St.

The Community has much and many to be grateful for; sponsors include The Knights of Columbus, Universal Healthcare Foundation, the Cigar House and Serralles Distillery, So CT Gas Co, Webster Bank, Giordano Construction, Cafe Mayor, Yale New Haven Hospital, United Illuminating, Health Net, Yale University, CT Mental Health Center, and the Community Foundation of Greater New Haven. Wilson Branch Library Opening

An enormous crowd turned out Saturday to witness the ribbon cutting of the new Courtland Seymour Wilson branch of the New Haven Free Public Library. (Click here for Melinda Tuhus’s visual and audio tour.)

Following a career at Yale New Haven Hospital, the passionate and inimitable Courtland Seymour Wilson worked tirelessly for improving the lives and circumstances of New Haven through his work in economic and community development. His successful efforts at Science Park and as Exec at the Hill Development Corporation catapulted him to the status of greatness as a community leader. The dedication of this new tremendous asset to The Hill was a fitting celebration of his life and legacy.

Family and friends, elected and appointed government officials, funders and fund raisers, architects and builders joined the neighbors to commemorate this achievement and pay tribute to the man.
