Downtown Crossing, Youth
Continuum Snag State $$

Two New Haven projects are set to receive a funding boost from the state, thanks to Connecticut Bond Commission decisions Friday.

Downtown Crossing — an effort to transform Route 34 into an urban boulevard connecting Union Avenue and College Street — was approved for $7.9 million: a relief to city planners who have struggled to secure money for the project.

I thank Gov. Malloy and the rest of the Bond Commission for their commitment to bring good jobs to the City of New Haven,” said New Haven State Rep. Roland Lemar in a press release. The federal, state, local and private investment in the Downtown Crossing project will generate 2,000 construction jobs, 960 permanent jobs a safer, a more vibrant and more efficient network of roads and pedestrian activity and result in millions of dollars in new tax revenue for New Haven.”

The commission also approved $350,000 for Youth Continuum, which provides social services, training and housing for foster and homeless youth in New Haven. The money will go towards renovations at two of the organization’s six group homes — Forbes and Uno House.
