Branford Man Killed In Downtown Car Crash

A 25-year-old Branford man named Max Peters died following a two-car crash at a notorious highway-adjacent downtown intersection.

New Haven Police Department (NHPD) spokesperson Officer Scott Shumway broke that news in a Friday afternoon email press release. In a separate email press release, Shumway also noted that, on Monday morning, city police responded to a shooting-hoax call in the Hill (See more on that below.)

On Friday afternoon, Shumway sent out an email press release about a fatal car crash at Trumbull and Orange Streets near the on- and off-ramps for Exit 3 of I‑91.

He wrote that at around 12:58 a.m. Friday, city police were dispatched to the Trumbull-Orange intersection for a motor vehicle crash.

Responding officers located two vehicles which crashed in the intersection; a grey Volvo, being operated by a 25-year-old Milford man, and a white Ford E450 box truck, being operated by a 30-year-old Naugatuck man. American Medical Response transported both operators to Yale New Haven Hospital where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries,” Shumway wrote. The passenger in the Volvo, identified as 25-year-old Max Peters of Branford, was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

On Monday morning, Shumway sent out a separate email press release about a shooting-hoax police call in the Hill.

He wrote that at around 10:27 a.m. city police received a call about a person shot on Hallock Avenue between Sargent Drive and 4th Street.

Responding officers did not locate a person shot or any evidence that a shooting occurred,” Shumway wrote. The officers continued their investigation and found the incident to be a hoax perpetrated by a juvenile student at Riverside Academy. No charges have been filed yet; however the incident remains under investigation.”
