Another day in New Haven, another pedestrian struck by a vehicle, and killed.
The latest such incident occurred Wednesday night around 8 p.m.
Officers headed to Dixwell Avenue and Admiral Street to respond to a report of a struck pedestrian.
“When they got there, they saw an unconscious male. He had been crossing the street near Dixwell and Charles with a walker. He was struck with a pick-up,” said police spokesperson Sgt. Shayna Kendall.
The man, who was 72 years old, was treated on scene, then transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The man’s age and identity were not immediately available Thursday morning.
Kendall said the Dodge pick-up driver remained on scene and is cooperating with the police investigation of the incident.
New Haven officials have been grappling in recent weeks with responses to what one termed “pedestrian slaughter” on city streets, with as many people being killed by vehicles as they are by guns in New Haven. Click here for a story on a City Hall public hearing on the subject held on Oct. 15.
