A Fair Haven-anchoring community health center has finished tearing down a three-story mixed-use building at Grand Avenue and James Street to make way for a larger neighborhood clinic.
Kristie Balisciano, a spokesperson for Fair Haven Health, said that demolition at 382 Grand Ave. began on Aug. 29 and was completed over two days. “The effort to clear the site continues.”
She said that tenants in a total of five residential units in the now-demolished building “were provided assistance in accordance with the Uniform Relocation Assistance Act to relocate to apartments of their choice. All tenants remain in New Haven except for one, who chose to move out of state.”
As for the ex-building’s commercial tenants, “Avelino’s Pizza moved to another location in New Haven. New Haven Pharmacy was temporarily moved into Fair Haven Community Health Care at 374 Grand Avenue, until the new building is completed.”
What happens next, now that the building has been torn down?
“With the building demolished construction will begin on a new 3‑story 35,560 square-foot health center to expand primary care and behavioral health for all ages in Fair Haven,” Balisciano wrote. “Expected completion is early 2025. In addition to the new building, we plan to make optimal use of our 374 Grand Avenue facility. The two buildings, old and new, will exist side by side to serve all people regardless of their ability to pay for decades to come.”
