Asst. Fire Chief Mark Vendetto said his department received the call about the fire behind the U.S. Post Office at 746 Chapel St. at 9: 26 a.m. on Thursday.
Three postal employees were in the post office at the time, he said. They evacuated themselves from the building and called in the fire.
“On arrival, we had a heavy fire in the exterior of the building, which extended into the building,” Vendetto said. “There is heavy smoke damage inside the post office.”
