A dumpster fire in a back lot caused heavy smoke damage inside the Chapel Street federal post office, and led to the temporary closure of stretches of Chapel and State. No one was injured.
Asst. Fire Chief Mark Vendetto said his department received the call about the fire behind the U.S. Post Office at 746 Chapel St. at 9: 26 a.m. on Thursday.
Three postal employees were in the post office at the time, he said. They evacuated themselves from the building and called in the fire.
“On arrival, we had a heavy fire in the exterior of the building, which extended into the building,” Vendetto said. “There is heavy smoke damage inside the post office.”
Approximately 27 firefighters responded to the scene.
