Former city Fire Chief Michael Grant died Sunday at the age of 70.
Grant served as a city firefighter for 42 years, beginning in 1972. He became chief in 2003, helming the department for 11 years.
He was inducted into Connecticut State Firefighters Association Hall of Fame in 2013.
He was proud of his service. “I’ve had an outstanding career,” he said at a 2014 gathering marking his last day before retirement. “I’ve worked with some of the best people in the profession. …
“Nothing is more gratifying than to be able help somebody.”
“As a young firefighter Chief Grant was everything you aspired to be,” recalled retired Assistant Chief and former fire union President Pat Egan.
“Chief Grant loved the NHFD and it’s firefighters more than anyone I know. He represented the true definition of what the courage and character of a firefighter is. I will miss him.”
