It probably started with a blow torch, then spread along the vines, surmised Steven.
Steven (he didn’t want his last name or photo published) lives in a house at Maple Street and Winthrop Avenue in the Edgewood neighborhood. He watched Wednesday morning as firefighters quickly extinguished a one-alarm fire in the stand-alone garage in the driveway.
The fire started around 9:30 a.m. The fire department sent four engines and a truck to the scene. The major damage was to the garage’s roof.
Lt. William Gambardella said he didn’t yet know the cause of the fire. As is routine, the arson investigation unit came onto the scene.
As it arrived, Steven offered his own theory.
Contractors were working on the garage roof, he said. “They had the blow torch on it; I know that. Maybe the wood kindles. The vines are growing through the garage. Maybe it caught.”
Steven said his brother owns the house — and his brother has insurance.
