Jazz Haven, under the dedicated leadership of President Doug Morrill, hosted a wonderful opening reception, at the Shubert, for the Jazz Hall of Fame exhibition from the New England Jazz Alliance. The timing of the exhibit, slated to be in New Haven for a few weeks, serendipitously coincides with the Festival of Arts and Ideas. It is a perfect venue for a “time out” between the festivities on the Green. Dedicated to presenting, preserving and advancing the music art form, the group hopes to celebrate the proud New Haven jazz history and contributions in its own permanent location.
The Hall of Fame was established in 2001, with the induction of ten honorees; only the deceased were considered as to recognize the roots of jazz in New England and make up for 100 years of overlooked history. In 2004, five more were honored. In 2002, a new
Category of “Unsung Hero” was established and New Haven’s own Buster Brothers, Eddie and Bobby, were elected for their dedication as musicians and mentors. The college of voters consists of some of the most knowledgeable musicians and professional devotees of New England jazz scene.
The Board members (pictured below) and the entire Buster clan turned out, in force, to welcome Ron Gill, president of the New England Jazz Alliance, owners of the restaurants and night club establishments that offer the musicians and their fans these wonderful opportunities, and of, course, fans of every age, size and description.
Our own “chapter” acts as presenter and collaborator of many local projects and programs. It has become so integral to our Arts Scene that it was presented with one of the coveted 2005 Arts Awards, bestowed by the Arts Council of Greater New Haven. In addition to all of their work for the Jazz Festival and the Pilot Pen preludes, they orchestrate the annual Monterey Caf√© Jazz Picnic (with multiple performances); this year it will be held at Farnam Memorial Gardens on Sunday, Aug. 27, with performances from 1 – 7 P.M. General admission is $30; VIP tickets are $50.00, providing a tee shirt and artist reception. Proceeds benefit CT Children and Families Center and Sister’s Journey. It is a great place to “Go Dishin’”!
