Gone Dishin’ In The Other Ville

Westville has become alive with the sounds of people from all over town, other towns and other states. The reality is that downtown’s entertainment district” and its activities and any other special tax district can look, with envy, at the transformation that is evidenced by the throngs that flock to this little community (without benefit
of salaried staff). The energy and vision of Thea Buxbaum and her assembled team have produced a vibrant Saturday nightlife that promises to expand. The focus is the wonderful Kehler Liddell Gallery and its ever changing mixed media shows and opening receptions, interspersed with concerts.

The diversity of artists is reflected in the crowds they draw. The works of Chris Engstrom, Miguel Trelles, John Keefer, Sigrun Muller, Lisa Cobham, Jessica Cuni, Nicole Festa and Allison Winfield Kalloo are currently featured. The admirers Saturday night included Dan Diaz and David Greco from Arte, Gar Waterman (sculptor), Brad Gallant (Day, Berry and Howard), Johanna Watley (professor NYU), Ted Brooks (financial adviser), Lindy Gold, Nancy Alexander, babies, teenagers mingled with a cordiality that was incredibly refreshing and spirited.

There was reason to celebrate as many of the revelers ambled on to the more elegant opening reception at John Cavaliere’s miraculous restoration at the new home of Lyric Restorations (relocated from State Street). This great addition to New Haven’s new Destination (now known as ArLoW) features craftsmanship from floor to ceiling. The historic building, once home to a theatre, boasts a hidden stage. John plans to renovate that portion of the building and add to the performing arts venues of the neighborhood. Many of the artists in the area are multi ‑talented.

Longtime Westvillers Morris (in photo) and Irm Wessel were out, too.

Next Saturday night will feature two such women in a concert of great vocals at The Kehler Liddell Gallery. Allison Kalloo (pictured), real estate developer, mentor, artist and ArLoW resident, cannot wait to expose her diva side as she explores jazz standards.
