Hamden Nears 900 Covid Cases

On Thursday, confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Hamden neared 900, reaching 895.

Ninety-three people have died of the virus.

Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management Gary Merwede offered those updates in an email to the Independent.

3,277 people had been tested in the town, bringing Hamden’s positive test rate to about 27 percent. The town’s case rate was 1,460 positive cases per 100,000 residents.

Seven town firefighters have tested positive for the virus since March, Merwede told the Independent. Four have recovered and have returned to duty, and three are still out.

The policy of the HFD is for all members to wear protective masks while in the fire station or during non-emergency travel in our apparatus,” Merwede wrote. We continue to remain vigilant in the cleaning of all equipment and high touch surfaces in the workplace.”

Police Chief John Cappiello said that no members of the Hamden police force have tested positive.

Hamden Public Schools have distributed over 60,000 meals since the pandemic began, said Superintendent Jody Goeler.

As Connecticut reopens it is my recommendation and hope that people in Hamden continue to refrain from shaking hands, maintain social distance when moving about in the community, and observe the socially responsible advice of wearing a simple face mask when in public,” Merwede wrote. If we observe the simple things that are in our control, like (masks) and frequent handwashing, we can continue the positive trend we find ourselves in right now.”

The latest statistics from New Haven: 2,332 confirmed Covid-19 cases, 95 fatalities.
