New Haven Mayor Toni Harp had this to say about Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign, according to Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign:
“As the mayor of a small, American city and after 21 years as state senator, I know firsthand how much our nation needs a leader brimming with intelligence, experience, and compassion, with a desire to boldly address long-standing issues. Hillary Clinton is that leader, who has honed her sense of American values in the U.S. Senate and as Secretary of State, who has polished her ideas about solving America’s challenges and who is now eager to engage those solutions.”
That quotation appeared in a press release issued by the Clinton’s campaign, announcing that 59 current and former African-American mayors have endorsed the former secretary of state’s quest for the Democratic presidential nomination. The release cited Clinton’s promise to “get incomes rising again, defend and expand the Affordable Care Act, make college affordable, make quality, affordable childcare a reality for families, expand access to the ballot box, and reform our criminal justice system.”
Clinton, originally considered the race’s frontrunner, is banking on black support to beat back an unexpectedly strong challenge from U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders, especially in early primaries in Southern states.
