Homicide In The Hill

(Updated)—A 36-year-old New Haven man died Friday after being shot near the intersection of Rosette Street and Wilson Street in the Hill.

City police spokesperson Capt. Anthony Duff sent out an email update about the homicide Friday at 8:30 p.m.

He sent out another email Saturday afternoon in which he identified the gunshot victim as named Ricky Newton.

Duff said police first responded to the Hill intersection at around 5 p.m. Friday in response to a ShotSpotter alert of gunfire in the area.

As officers were responding, a 911 caller reported that a gunshot victim was inside of a corner store at that location.

Duff said that arriving emergency responders located the victim and an ambulance transported him to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

As of 8:00 p.m., detectives remained at the crime scene. Witnesses are urged to contact the New Haven Police Department at 203 – 946-6304.

According to the police department’s latest CompStat report, there had been eight murders in the city so far this year as of July 5. Friday’s homicide brings that total to nine.

The shooting death is the second in the Hill in less than a month. Click here to read about a June 20 homicide on Elliot Street.
