The following writeup was submitted by Mitchell Public Library Branch Manager Marian Huggins, as part of a monthly series by the Independent and the New Haven Free Public Library to spotlight books newly acquired by the city’s library.
One of the newest additions to the Mitchell Branch library’s shelves is The Reformatory by Tananarive Due. I was never truly a horror fan, but the storytelling is so rich that I became a fan of this author over twenty years ago through her African Immortals Series.
The first book in the series was My Soul to Keep in 1997. The sequel was The Living Blood, published in 2001. I’ve never stopped thinking about those books, and yes, they are still available at the New Haven Free Public Library.
When I heard that Due was writing a book about a 1950s Florida Reform School, I thought, um, didn’t Colson Whitehead already explore this topic in The Nickel Boys?
Well yes, but The Reformatory is written by the master horror writer Tananarive Due, and she brings in the supernatural!
As if reality wasn’t terrifying enough. I highly recommend this one!
Here are some other great books brought to you by various staff across the NHFPL system. Enjoy!
