Loan Fun

Nov. 9, 2005

Good Eggs all arrived at Anthony’s Ocean View to scramble around the Greater New Haven Community Loan Fund’s annual fund raiser. This year’s Good Egg Award” recipient was State Treasurer Denise Nappier, so honored for her establishment of the Housing Trust Fund.

The program was blessedly brief, it being the day after elections. None of those elected opted for the WTNH photo opportunity — hard to believe, but they’d had enough. The two exceptions were State Rep. Nancy Beals, in attendance with her husband; and Alderman Rose Santana, there to represent New Alliance Bank, as she will be replaced by her successor on the board.

The Man who would be King sent Wendy Clarke, city economic development director, along with Andy Rizzo of Livable City Initiative. Regina Winters of the housing authority made a final appearance in that role.

John Rowland (president of GNHCL) extended his greetings to friends and family; imagine — with that name, he is the nephew in law of Phyllis and Leon Medvedow, who were in from Woodmont to show their support on the eastern shoreline. Carla Weil, executive director of the loan fund, was a radiant and exhuberant hostess. Her colleague Raquel Santiago-Martinez orchestrated the program with grace and humor; we hope she has decided not to give up her day job to be a full-time auctioneer. The silent auction was a big success: gift certificates that keep on giving and they are very easy to wrap!

State officials included Gary King and Tim Coppage of the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority. The Community Foundation, solid supporters of these initiatives, sent representatives Amos Smith and Angel Fernandez-Chavero; what charmers!! They were joined by Maria Mojica from the Graustein Foundation.

Heidi Green, formerly of the Fund, reunited for the occasion; she is now the exec at 1000 Friends of CT.
There were bankers galore ‑community reinvestment is a beautiful thing!!!
Bank of America, Citizens, Bank of Southern CT, New Alliance and Wachovia all on the same page a real financial lovefest for the greater good.
It’s hard to keep their corporate name changes straight, let alone their executives!

It’s a good thing Anthony and his staff are such gracious and generous hosts to the non profits- even on a rainy night, this group of well seasoned party goers found everything they wanted and more!
