The New Haven Democratic Town Committee has drafted a statement in support of Puerto Rico, after comedian Tony Hinchcliffe called the island “a floating island of garbage” during his set at Donald Trump’s New York rally on Sunday. Read the statement in full below:
The New Haven Democratic Town Committee stands firmly in support of Puerto Rico and its vibrant community, both on the island and across Connecticut. Puerto Rico is home to a proud and resilient people who have contributed immensely to our nation’s history, culture, and progress.
We are deeply disheartened by recent divisive rhetoric aimed at Puerto Rico and its people. As Americans, we are all part of a shared story, one rooted in diversity, compassion, and mutual respect. Disparaging any community goes against the principles that bind us together — whether you live in New Haven, New York, or San Juan.
At a time when unity is essential, it is our responsibility to reject hurtful language and instead uplift one another. Puerto Ricans have shown extraordinary strength in the face of challenges, from natural disasters to economic adversity. Their contributions to our country are undeniable and must be recognized and celebrated, not diminished.
We call on leaders across the political spectrum to rise above rhetoric that seeks to divide us. Our focus must be on fostering dialogue, cooperation, and policies that support all Americans, including our fellow citizens in Puerto Rico. In New Haven, we stand with Puerto Ricans and the values of equality and inclusion that define our democracy.
We are proud to celebrate our Puerto Rican community and reaffirm our commitment to a future where everyone — regardless of background — is treated with dignity, respect, and opportunity.
Together, we are stronger.
