Insook Hwang
There are artists who have studios in their homes, but not so many whose entire home is a studio. Insook Hwang is close to being one of these, with every room of the apartment she resides in containing either a work in progress or some plot for a painted wall or dangling constellations of small pillows with viewing screens. No matter what the scale of any particular piece, each one has an exuberance that fills the space around it, while demanding – most courteously – more and more room.
It’s as if some pirate radio station had all its programming made visible, with its alternative information circulating as bubbles of promise, or cascades of romance emanating from loopily phallic transmitters. There is a confident delight, with nothing naive about it, to these images. In them, one might well see designs for a better, laughing world.
