Steven Kleinstein was 30 minutes late to his dinner at the Union League Tuesday. He would have been a lot later if firefighters hadn’t saved him from the elevator at the Crown Street Parking Garage.
Kleinstein parked his car and stepped onto the elevator at the corner of Crown and College around 7:10 p.m. When he got to ground level, the doors wouldn’t open.
He remained trapped until firefighters from Squad One got called to the job.
Firefighters Heather Myers, Miguel Rosado, Jr. and Robert Bonetti (pictured) freed him within minutes using an elevator “drop key.” Then they headed to the roof to turn the power off to the offending elevator while Lt. Seamus Bohan (at far right in photo) stood guard.
Kleinstein emerged from the elevator around 7:30 with a smile on his face.
“I’m relieved to be out,” he said. He said he was now a half-hour late to his dinner at Union League.
Kleinstein said he often parks at the garage.
“The ironic thing is, I always take the stairs. I never take the elevator.”
