A man was shot dead at Dixwell Avenue and Gibbs Street Tuesday afternoon, around a block from where another homicide occurred last week.
The man was shot in the face or elsewhere in the head, according to preliminary reports from police.
Police were looking from a black full-sized SUV, thought to be a Jeep Cherokee or Laredo, being driven away from the scene.
The shooting occurred around 3:30 p.m. The man was shot “multiple” times and was transported to the Hospital of St. Raphael, where he was later pronounced dead, according to police. Police identified the victim as 23-year-old Shaine Deran Barrett.
The website Ice The Beef, which first put out the news about the homicide, lit up with comments about the homicide, including a thread about the word that someone had posted a photo of Barrett’s corpse on Instagram. “Wow that mean that the person must have been a witness since they taking pics and shit smh niggas are so dumb and have no respect,” wrote one woman.
The shooting took place just as the U.S. Attorney’s office and top local cops were wrapping up a downtown press conference about the latest arrests of alleged gang members in New Haven.
A 20-year-old Danbury woman was fatally shot on the same block as Barrett at 12:17 a.m. last Wednesday. Click here to read about that. Police said Tuesday they believe she was not the intended target.
