Two separate incidents of gunfire, one fatal, occurred within an hour of each other in Newhallville late Monday afternoon.
The first occurred on Starr Street around 4:30 p.m. Alerted by ShotSpotter, police found a 21-year-old man had been shot. He was taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Police Chief Karl Jacobson said it appears that the shooting stemmed from “a prior beef that occurred earlier in the year.” He said it is believed that two gunman emerged from a car parked around the corner and walked up to the victim on Starr and fired at him.
“We have strong leads” on the suspects, and detectives are working hard on the case, Jacobson said. They found ballistic evidence at the scene and interviewed the victim.
The second incident occurred less than an hour later, indoors, within blocks of the first shooting. A 14-year-old boy shot himself to death, Jacobson said. He said that incident is not related to the earlier shooting.
