On Monday night, the Board of Alders awarded veteran New Haven Register reporter Mary O’Leary an official citation in honor of her five decades of local reporting and on her retirement. Below is a transcription of the citation, which can be downloaded here.

In recognition of your retirement from the New Haven Register and everything you have done to keep the people of New Haven in the know .…
We present this to you in recognition of your 2020 much-deserved and well-earned retirement after your 50 years in the business. Our colleagues hold you in the highest regard due to all of your time spent serving the greater New Haven community with integrity, dignity and distinction. Through your work and efforts, our residents and your readers have benefited from your willingness to write about everything happening in New Haven and to encourage us to make our city even better. We will miss you and your skills and knowledge greatly, but we know that you leave a legacy that sets the standard for reporters to follow in the future, We wish you a relaxed time in your retirement, filled with happiness, health, and endless visits with your grandchildren in Oregon.
Congratulations, and remember as Sir J. Lubbock said: “Rest is not idleness, and to lie sometimes on the grass on a summer day listening to the murmur of water, or watching the clouds float across the sky, is hardly a waste of time.”
