YNHH Plans New Construction On St. Raphael Campus

Yale New Haven Hospital is adding to its Saint Raphael campus in a move expected to boost city revenues in the coming fiscal year.

Mayor Toni Harp confirmed Monday that a line in her proposed new city budget refers to a big-ticket project envisioned for the hospital’s current footprint in town.

We’re in negotiations with Yale as we speak about a building that they hope to build,” Harp said.

Discussions have taken place in recent months about a multi-story medical building on the Chapel-Orchard street blocks on the campus of the former Hospital of St. Raphael in the Dwight/West River neighborhood, including a possible new parking garage.

The discussions have focused on Yale New Haven plans for a combination of demolition and new construction, according to participants. The plans fit into a broader intention of the hospital to upgrade the St. Raphael campus, which it purchased from the former Hospital of St. Raphael in 2012.

Yale New Haven Vice-President Vin Petrini said the hospital can’t comment about specific proposals at this point.

But New Haven is our home, and any time we seek to invest in access to care, we want to do so in ways that are mutually beneficial to the city and hospital,” he said.

The $556.6 million proposed operating budget for the upcoming fiscal year, which Harp released last week, anticipates a $6 million jump in revenue from building permits, from $11.9 million in this year’s budget to $17.9 million. Building permits increased for project related to Yale New Haven Hospital,” the budget proposal reads.

Also on Mayor Monday,” Harp spoke about efforts to improve New Haven’s Election Day voting process and about why she disagrees with one listener’s suggestion to transform the registrar of voters positions into appointed rather elected jobs.
