No Timetable for EPA
Decision on Nanosilver

HeiQ

Swiss textiles maker HeiQ is marketing textiles featuring nanosilver as an antibacterial agent. The company is waiting for EPA approval of its AGS-20 agent.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing public comments on a proposal to give conditional approval to a nanosilver product, but there’s no word yet on when a final decision might come down.

A spokesperson for the agency said the EPA is considering all comments received” but has no deadline. The comment period for the proposed conditional registration of HeiQ AGS-20 as a pesticide ended Sept. 11. (You can read the comments, as well as materials submitted to the agency, here).

Nanosilver is already in use in lots of products, from workout clothes to toothbrushes, but the EPA has yet to weigh in on the material.
