U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Mayor Justin Elicker joined Supt. Dr. Madeline Negrón in a convocation celebrating the contributions New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) staff will make in the coming school year. The event was held Tuesday, Aug. 27 at the Lyman Center, Southern Connecticut State University.
The purpose of the convocation is to reinforce a vision for the work of the district and to provide inspiration for the coming school year. In addition to remarks by Blumenthal and Elicker, educators heard from New Haven Teacher of the Year Julia Miller.
Keynote speaker Dr. Timothy Shriver, a former NHPS teacher and co-founder of the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning, spoke about the importance of respecting the dignity of each child as a prerequisite for teaching and learning. Dr. Negrón thanked teachers for their work and addressed priorities for the year ahead, including continued emphasis on literacy and attendance, as well as a focus on school climate, which can contribute to both teaching and learning.
Performances included the Betsy Ross Student Dancers and the Staff/Student Band.
