The morning after a surprise raid in New York City cleared out the center of the national Occupy Wall Street movement, New Haven’s encampment appeared safe from the threat of any similar operation.
That was the word, at least, from mayoral spokesman Adam Joseph.
Joseph was asked whether New Haven plans to follow the lead of New York City overnight, and Oakland the day before, in sending in cops to clear away “Occupiers” camping out to protest corporate greed and government policies that promote income inequality. Police in both those cities clashed with demonstrators who defied orders to pack up. Officials in those cities cited public-health concerns. Two hundred New York “occupiers” were arrested.
“In New Haven we have a 373 year history of public assembly on the Green,” Joseph responded. “The city’s number-one concern is public safety. As long as the occupiers are taking proper safety precautions the city has no problem with their assembly on the Green.”
