On The Job: Louis Gripper

Paul Bass Photo

Profession: Postal deliverer.

How work has changed during pandemic: Used to work 46 hours a week, with overtime. Now working up to 60. More volume to keep up with. He’s pictured working his second Sunday since the pandemic started; he hoped to finish within eight hours, by 6 p.m., but it was looking like 8 p.m. might be more realistic.

Why he’s working longer hours: The Amazon parcels have picked up. The letters and flats have dropped.”

How he’s staying healthy: Sanitizing, wearing the mask when I’m around people, trying to keep that distance.”

What interactions are like: People are just saying , Thank you for being here.’ One of my customers told me he looks forward to seeing me throughout the day because there’s nothing going on.’”

Who in his immediate orbit has contracted Covid-19: Two cousins. Looks like they’ll be OK.
