A 24-year-old Pennsylvania man was killed and a 40-year-old Newhallville man was injured in a Friday afternoon shooting on Shepard Street.

Police Chief Karl Jacobson and Asst. Chief Bert Ettienne confirmed the fatal shooting during interviews on the scene between 4 and 5 p.m. near a closed off block of Shepard Street between Read and Goodrich Streets.

City police spokesperson Officer Scott Shumway provided more details about what happened in a follow up email press release sent out at 6:18 p.m. Friday.

Chief Jacobson.

Shumway wrote that police responded at around 1:52 p.m. to the report of a person shot on Shepard Street between Read Street and the Hamden town line. An ambulance transported the victim to Yale New Haven Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.”

A short time later, Shumway wrote, a second gunshot victim walked into Yale New Haven Hospital on Chapel Street. The 40-year-old New Haven man was then transported to the York Street campus of Yale where he is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.”

Jacobson told the Independent at the scene that the injured man is known to the police.”

He also said the injured man is at the hospital in stable” condition. And he said that both men — the man who was killed and the man who was injured — were shot multiple times.

It appears to be a targeted situation,” Jacobson said about Friday’s shooting. Ettienne added that this appears to be an isolated incident.”

No suspects have been identified at this time.

The block of Shepard between Read and Goodrich will remain closed for part of Friday evening as officers canvass the area in search of information to help figure out what took place this afternoon.

Police ask that any witnesses who have not yet spoken with the Police contact the New Haven Police Department Investigative Services Division at 203 – 946-6304. Callers may remain anonymous or submit tips anonymously by calling 1 – 866-888-TIPS(8477), or email to ECIC@newhavenct.gov.

I’ve lived here for 40 years,” a passerby said upon learning that a person had been shot to death on this Newhallville block. This ain’t nothing new,” he said with dismay.

That’s crazy. It makes me scared,” said another passerby. Makes me think that could be me too.”

State Sen. Gary Winfield, who lives in Newhallville, arrived on scene by foot at around 4:15 p.m. after hearing about the afternoon shooting.

He said he showed up to see if and how he could help anyone on the block, and out of a concern for violence in any part of the city. This is created through a combination of circumstances,” he said.
