Congregation Beth Israel, more widely known as the Orchard Street Shul, is having an open house on Sunday, Oct. 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., according to Barry Herman, an officer of the congregation.
The building, which dates from 1927, is in need of significant repair. The synagogue board, however, is planning to renovate the historic building and keep it as a Jewish congregation. Details of plans for the revival will be discussed at the open house, Herman said.
The synagogue is at 232 Orchard St., in New Haven, near the storied Legion Avenue, which had been the center of Jewish life in the Elm City before the urban renewal of the 1960s.
The Orchard Street Shulwas founded in 1913 and was led by Rabbi Maurice Hecht from 1948 to 1990, according to the synagogue’s history.
