Roller Coaster

Feels as if everything’s moving fast
Although the mornings sweet and slow

Kids asleep in their beds
Knowing what they know
One day I’ll tell them about Luna Park
We’re there on the Big One flying in the dark
Out the window there outside
Pandemic’s got us
On an unruly wild ride
Change that might have taken years
Overcoming national shame
And all those other things hard to name
We’ve blinked, and they’re already here
Are you as bewildered as I, my dear?
Have we too been asleep so long
Like that boy murmuring his morning song
That our very waking feels like a dream
Suddenly flying off its unstable tracks
My God, we need a place to ease down,
Without going back
There’s only everything at stake
Got to stay dizzy and yet awake,
Down below there’s no scaffold in sight
Got to get up, keep working, got to keep flying
Otherwise what’s the purpose of all this dying
All hands up! On this roller coaster
Go on, scream and shout
Just nobody, please, fall out
Everyone belted tight?
Maybe we’ll spot a place to land tonight.
