The alleged shooter’s car.

A driver got into an argument with a 46-year-old panhandler, then shot him three or four times.”

So reported Hamden police spokesperson Capt. Ronald Smith.

Smith said the incident occurred near Arch and Bowen streets Wednesday around 3:30 a.m.

It began as the panhandler got into the dispute with a driver of a grey Chevy Malibu sedan at a mini-mart at 144 Arch St. The panhandler then walked away, eastbound on Arch, according to Smith.

The driver followed in his car, pulled and gun, and started firing.

The panhandler, who was shot in the leg, was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital. His injuries were described as non-life-threatening.

Smith asked anyone with information about the incident to call Detective Andrew Lipford at (203) 230‑4055.
