A pedestrian was struck and killed on Sherman Parkway early Wednesday morning in a fatal hit-and-run crash.
New Haven Police Department (NHPD) spokesperson Capt. Rose Dell described the city’s latest pedestrian fatality in a Wednesday morning press release.
She wrote that, at around 3 a.m., police officers and firefighters responded to Sherman Parkway near West Division Street “after a passerby reported a male was on the ground bleeding from his head.”
“Officers arrived quickly and located the male in the middle of the roadway near the double yellow line,” Dell continued. “He was unconscious and suffering from significant injuries. An ambulance rushed the pedestrian to Yale-New Haven Hospital. There, he was pronounced deceased.”
Dell wrote that the identity of the pedestrian remains unknown.
“Officers could not locate the involved vehicle or any witnesses to the crash. There may be video surveillance on a home in the area, but no one answered the knock on the door due to the late hour.”
She wrote that the deceased has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
And she wrote that the police department’s Crash Reconstruction Team has completed its initial on-scene investigation. “The investigators will continue to search for witnesses and video surveillance. The investigation is expected to take some time.”
Anyone who witnessed this crash or who may have information valuable to the investigators is urged to contact police via phone at 203 – 946-6304 or through the Department’s anonymous tip-line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).
Wednesday morning’s pedestrian fatality comes roughly a week after a 42-year-old New Havener named Judith Williams was struck and killed by a car on Whalley Avenue near Hudson Street.
Pedestrian deaths are on the rise across Connecticut, with 75 such fatalities statewide last year, leading safe streets advocates to push in Hartford for automated speed enforcement, among other proposed remedies for fatally unsafe roads.
