A 65-year-old man died after a car struck him on Dixwell Avenue.
The crash took place Thursday around 6 p.m.
Calvin Washington, of Hamden, was crossing Dixwell Avenue at Saint James Street when a car driven northbound by a 38-year-old Middletown resident struck him, according to Hamden police spokesperson Capt. Ronald Smith.
Hamden firefighters worked at the scene to keep him alive. Independent reader Joyce Bellamy captured the moment on video; watch it above.
Washington was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators kept Dixwell Avenue closed for “nearly seven hours,” Smith reported. He asked anyone with information about the crash to call Officer Brett Ferarra at (203) 281‑8222.
NHI I am really disheartened to see that you saw fit to show a gratuitous clip of this man lying in the street getting chest compressions. What does that add to the story and how would you feel if it was your family member? My mother was hit by a car as a pedestrian and killed and I can tell you seeing something like this would have been very upsetting to our family.
