Bankruptcy Lawyer In Deeper Trouble

A New Haven bankruptcy lawyer who surrendered his license after hundreds of thousands of his clients’ dollars went missing is now facing federal cirminal charges.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office announced Monday that it has charged the lawyer, Peter Ressler, 68, with embezzlement. He is charged in connection of two cases in which clients entrusted him with money that Ressler allegedly used for other purposes,” $450,000 in one case, $321,409 in the other.

Ressler appeared on the charges in federal court in Bridgeport Monday, then was released on $100,000 bond.

Ressler is cooperating with authorities in the investigation, according to an affidavit filed by FBI Special Agent Timothy J. Simao.

In interviews with the FBI, Ressler acknowledged embezzling monies from the 329 Greene Street and the Eternal Enterprises bankruptcy estates as well as to a wider range of embezzlements involving other clients,” Simao wrote.

Ressler formally resigned his law licenses April 7 in a proceeding in state Superior Court on Church Street, as detailed in this previous article.
