After years making laws in Hartford and bringing airline service to New Haven, Sean Scanlon is ready to start signing state government paychecks and negotiating workers’ health plans.
Scanlon — a Guilford state representative and executive director of Tweed New Haven Airport — formally announced Monday that he’s running for the Democratic nomination for state comptroller.
Scanlon, 35, is widely expected to win that nomination. Mary Fay of Avon is running for the Republican nomination for the statewide position.
The comptroller serves as state government’s chief financial officer: overseeing payroll and benefits for 65,000 employees; negotiating their health plans, serving as the top fiscal watchdog, issuing monthly budget reports.
In his announcement, Scanlon touted his experience tackling state finances as co-chair of the legislature’s Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee and former chair of the Insurance Committee; and his work negotiating a complex, politically challenging deal to expand Tweed and bring commercial service through Avelo Airlines.
“Too many Connecticut residents are hurting right now, whether it’s from the increased cost of living, rising gas prices, or the high cost of health care and prescription drugs,” Scanlon stated in the announcement. “I have a record as both a legislator and as a business leader of taking on tough fights and winning them, and as state comptroller I’ll work every day to make Connecticut more affordable for all of its families, workers and small businesses.”
