School Lunch Snowed Out

The New Haven Green Monday.

The New Haven Public Schools canceled its meal distribution program on Monday and may cancel it again on Tuesday.

Despite hopes to continue serving breakfasts and lunches to New Haven students during Monday’s snowstorm, the district realized that food workers would not be able to get to or even park at the schools after all.

Superintendent Iline Tracey said that a call went out to all families on Monday morning through ParentLink. She said that the district will make another call through the system by 6 p.m. on Monday evening informing families whether Tuesday’s meal program will also be canceled.

The mayor is saying that it might take a while to dig [the city] out. We can’t put our folks at risk,” Tracey said.

One reader reported to the Independent that they didn’t get the Monday morning announcement and trekked through the snow to a closed school and no food. As of 4 p.m. on Monday, the New Haven Public Schools website still showed an incorrect announcement that meals would be available from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on the two snow days.
