At least 27 additional people, and probably more, need to quarantine after four more Covid-19 cases have been identified in public schools.
And in a separate incident, a hit-and-run driver sent a security guard to the hospital after striking her at a dismissal line.
Those latest updates were provided by schools spokesperson Justin Harmon.
“Two individuals at James Hillhouse High School, one at Benjamin Jepson Magnet School, and one at Sound School have tested positive for Covid-19,” Harmon reported in a news release Friday. The health department has ordered the four to stay home in isolation for 10 days. As a result of contact tracing, nine people from Jepson and 18 from Sound will also quarantine. “The number at Hillhouse is still pending,” Harmon stated.
It was expected that some Covid cases would emerge and quarantines ordered when schools reopened this week. That has been happening all over the country, as a consensus developed that children need to be present in school in possible during the pandemic, and officials have crafted policies to react swiftly when cases emerge.
Three students’ Covid cases were confirmed on Monday and Tuesday, at Davis Street, Edgewood, and Beecher magnet schools. As a result, nine Davis students, three Edgewood students, and six Beecher students began 10-day quarantines as the school system followed Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and state guidelines.
On Thursday, the school confirmed Covid cases at Barack H. Obama Magnet University, Wilbur Cross High, and Bishop Woods Architecture and Design Magnet schools, leading to 12 additional quarantines.
Meanwhile, here’s what Harmon wrote about the incident Friday involving the security guard: “This afternoon, a security guard at Worthington Hooker School was struck by a car that had been queued in the dismissal line. The guard’s leg was injured, and she was transported to the hospital by ambulance. The driver of the car fled the scene. Police are investigating.”
