Approximately 1,000 students may be turned away from school Friday if families don’t meet the submission deadline for their students’ health immunization forms this year.
Superintendent Iline Tracey reported that one month into the school year the district is dealing with an estimated 1,000 students whose families have not submitted their immunization and health documentation that is required for the school year.
“Schools are reaching out to the families in a continued effort to reduce that number before the Friday deadline,” school’s spokesperson Justin Harmon said in a email response to the Independent.
So far letters from the city health department have been sent to families with students who have not submitted their immunization documentation as well as emails from the district to reduce the number who will be turned away at the end of the week. Without the forms the students cannot attend school per state health requirements, Tracey said.
Families have until the Sept. 30 deadline before students are no longer allowed to attend school for safety reasons.
The district is seeing the biggest immunization record gaps with kindergarten, seventh, and tenth-grade students.
“Sept 30 is the last day. After Sept. 30 we will not be able to accept these students back into school until they come into compliance,” Tracey said.
