With New Haven expecting 6 to 10 inches of snow Tuesday, the city is encouraging residents to stay smart and safe.
At a Monday press conference, Chief Administrative Officer (and Acting Emergency Director) Regina Rush-Kittle warned drivers to stay off the roads if possible and homeowners and landlords to shovel sidewalks to ensure a path that is at least three feet wide, for wheelchair-users and strollers.
Mayor Justin Elicker announced that warming centers will be open from 7 p.m. Monday until 7 a.m. Wednesday. Elicker also announced that there will be a parking ban in effect starting at 12 a.m. on Tuesday:
- There will be no parking permitted downtown on either side of the street.
- There will be no parking along snow emergency routes on either side of the street.
- Across the city, cars only allowed to park only on the even side of the street.
The Parking Authority is allowing everyone to park their cars at the Temple Street garage, the Crown Street garage, the State Street garage, and the Granite Square garage for $3 per day, from Monday at 7 p.m. until Wednesday at 9 a.m.
New Haven Public Schools parking lots will also be open, but you can’t park just anywhere. Make sure to follow signs that identify open spots. But, since schools will be closed tomorrow (and even Avelo flights in and out of Tweed will be delayed), cars have to be moved by 12 a.m. Wednesday in time for schools to reopen.
Although schools will be closed Tuesday, Superintendent Madeline Negrón said that, while families should enjoy the snow with their children, learning doesn’t have to stop. “Find at least 20 minutes to pick up a book and read,” she said with a smile.
