Sergio Rodriguez blew up balloons and provided chocolate chip, oatmeal, and sugar cookies with pink sprinkles to mark the opening of his campaign headquarters for the final push of his primary challenge for the 92nd General Assembly District seat.
The Wednesday evening event drew Newhallville Alderman (and Rodriguez assistant campaign manager) Charles Blango and Edgewood Alderman Marcus Paca, along with 30 volunteers and staff to the rented office on a recessed plaza on Whalley Avenue between Anthony and Davis streets.
Meanwhile a short ways across Westville at her headquarters on Alden at West Elm, 13-term incumbent State Rep. Pat Dillon oversaw distribution of campaign materials to more than a dozen volunteers who hit the streets.
They were all out knocking on doors, and she was on her way to visit two volunteers in preparation for Saturday canvassing along Sherman Avenue.
Rodriguez and Dillon are facing off in an Aug. 10 primary for the Democratic nomination for the 92nd District seat, which represents Westville, West River, and Edgewood.
It’s become a spirited campaign, with both sides visible throughout the district.
Blango characterized his candidate’s situation as akin to David taking on Goliath.
“I don’t see any real danger,” remarked Dillon’s campaign manager, Darryl Brackeen, Jr. “Our job is to let all voters know there is an Aug. 10 primary. And then her [Dillon’s] name speaks for itself.”
After thanking his volunteers Wednesday night, Rodriguez charged them: “Let’s get out there, but let’s [also not forget to] have some food.”
Both candidates are financing their campaigns through $26,000 grants from the Citizens Election Program. Rodriguez estimated that all told his campaign will have engaged some 40 to 60 people. Dillon said hers had attracted about 100 volunteers.
