4 People Injured In 3 Weekend Shootings

Four more people were injured across three different shootings that took place downtown, in Fair Haven, and in Newhallville over the weekend.

Those shootings are described in three different social media posts published by the New Haven Police Department (NHPD) on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Police published the first shooting-related press release of the weekend midday on Saturday.

That press release states that, at around 2:40 a.m. on Saturday, officers responded to the area of 200 Temple St. downtown for the report of a person shot after a caller reported a drive by shooting in which a male was struck.”

Responding officers found a 32-year-old New Haven man with a graze wound to his leg.” He was transported to the hospital by a private vehicle, and his injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening.

A crime scene with ballistic evidence was located in the area.”

On Saturday at 10:13 p.m., city police published a one-sentence post to X stating that NHPD was on scene with a shooting victim in the area of Ferry Street/Chatham Street” in Fair Haven.

And on Sunday at 9:41 p.m., city police published still another shooting update press release on X, this time for a gunfire incident that took place in Newhallville.

That post states that, at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, city police officers responded to the area of Shelton Avenue and Ivy Street for a ShotSpotter alert.

There were initial reports of three people shot, however officers ultimately determined there were two victims.” Both men — one from Hamden, the other New Haven — are 20 years old. Both were transported to the hospital by private vehicle: one to Yale New Haven Hospital’s (YNHH) York Street campus, the other to YNHH’s St. Raphael’s campus.

Both men were initially listed as critical, but their condition has been upgraded to stable,” according to the release.

The X post described a large crime scene with ballistic evidence” in the area. Detectives interviewed people involved.”

Police ask that anyone who may have witnessed or have information valuable to investigators regarding any of these shootings call detectives at 203 – 946-6304 or reach out through the department’s anonymous tip line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).

This weekend’s shootings come after two men were injured last Monday afternoon during a drive-by shooting in Cedar Hill, and after four people were shot in three different gunfire incidents in two days the previous Monday and Tuesday.

According to the city’s latest weekly CompStat report, which covers crime data through Sept. 1, 60 people had been shot and injured by that time this year, compared to 49 at that time last year. The number of confirmed shots fired, meanwhile, had dropped from 195 at that time last year to 116 at that time this year. And the number of homicides was also down, from 16 at that time last year to eight so far this year.
