A construction worker helping build Yale School of Management’s new $146 million campus landed in the hospital Wednesday after a steel brace fell on him.
The accident occurred around 8:30 a.m.
Here’s what happened, according to Assistant Fire Chief Ralph Black:
The worker was at ground level with a Dimeo Construction crew at the 165 Whitney Ave. SOM site breaking down a platform brace. The temporary platform held concrete in place until it dried.
A brace from the platform fell and struck the man, leaving him with a “fairly significant” ankle injury as well as facial cuts. He went to the hospital for treatment.
The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the incident, with participation from the fire department, Yale police, and Dimeo, Black said.
“We’re not sure exactly what happened” to cause the brace to fall, Black said. He did not have the worker’s name or age available.
“The site is up and running” except for the specific spot of the fallen brace, said a Yale spokeswoman, who declined to be identified by name. She said she had no information on whether the accident prompted any changes in work site conditions or practices.
Dimeo officials could not be reached for comment.
