(Update) A 26-year-old New Havener named Shamar Gibson was fatally stabbed on Orchard Street Saturday afternoon.
According to a press release sent out by email by the New Haven Police Department Sunday morning, city police officers were dispatched to the St. Raphael’s hospital campus on Chapel Street at 2:12 p.m. Saturday for the report of a stabbing victim who arrived by a private vehicle.
“Responding officers quickly established a crime scene at the main entrance of the hospital where the vehicle was left,” the press release states, “and were able to determine that the assault occurred on Orchard Street but were not sure of the exact location.”
At that same time, a caller reported that there was blood on the walkway and fence at an address in the area of Orchard and Henry Streets. Officers responded to that area as well, where they established another crime scene.
The stabbing victim, a 26-year-old New Havener whom police have not yet identified, was stabbed multiple times. He was “was pronounced deceased by medical personnel.” Update: On Monday, police spokesperson Officer Christian Bruckhart identified the victim as Shamar Gibson.

Saturday’s stabbing death marked the city’s seventh homicide of the year so far, and its second fatal stabbing in two months.
