Michael Favaloro picked up a sledgehammer and crowbar rather than a phone or computer mouse to do his job Wednesday.

Favaloro (in photo), who works in marketing for the Stantec engineering firm, spent the morning with his colleagues in Edgewood Park repairing rotted out stairs and a handrail leading from Edgewood Avenue down to the West River.

Nearby, environmental scientist Melissa Bezanson (at right in photo) mixed paint with Stantec colleagues Emily Bousaada and Jennifer Waldron, then painted over graffiti on a stone retaining wall. Another crew expanded a walking path from the mid-park bridge toward the archery field down below Yale Avenue.

The engineering firm, which has a local office on Church Street, had 8,000 employees doing similar work in communities worldwide for a fourth annual day of service, according to local project manager Jeff Olszewski. Elsewhere in New Haven, Stantec-ies were painting in East Rock Park. The company worked with the Friends” groups in both parks to identify needed work.
