The Hillhouse High marching band led a parade down Sherman Avenue. But first there were three women to honor.
That was the scene on Sherman between Whalley Avenue and Percival Street Saturday afternoon. Start Community bank, along with Neighborhood Housing Services, held a “Multicultural Family Fun” block party in its parking lot there. The event drew some 300 people.
Along with free food, the event featured performances by the Latin band Carlos y Su Momento Musical, DJ White Rock, a hip-hop and breakdancing troupe under the banner “Poetry in Motion,” “Estampas de Mexico” and “Generation Latina Virgen del Cisne” dancers, and the Bomba Y Plena Puerto Rican ensemble.
The event featured as well an award ceremony for community activists who make a difference. Honorees were Diane Brown, who’s in charge of the Stetson Branch Library on Dixwell Avenue; Marsha Royster of FISH; and Newhallville Rising Dream Team’s Latoya Agnew. (Read about her here.)
