Timothy Turner was walking across the Stop & Shop on Whalley Avenue in the pouring rain sporting a Chicago Bulls Bucket hat, a sweatshirt, and jeans. He didn’t have an umbrella, but he still wore a bright smile across his face.
Turner was headed down Whalley to catch a ride to work from his friend. This is a part of his daily routine: He works for a landscaping company called M City Green on Dixwell Avenue, directly across from the Q House.
“I do landscaping. I do floor work, sheetrocking, painting,” Turner said, on the “Word on the Street” segment of WNHH FM’s “LoveBabz LoveTalk” program.
The 57-year old also works alone as an independent contractor. That’s what Thursday’s work would involve due to the rain.
“I’m on my way right now to lay down some floors and tile,” Turner said. “It’s inside work.”
Turner said that he hopes to retire soon. He wants to have time to enjoy life; he also has injuries from car accidents.
“I ain’t got no money to retire right now with,” Turner said. “I want to retire!”
Originally from South Carolina, Turner keeps his family close. During the segment, he reminisced about how he met his “ol’ lady” over 20 years ago.
“We met at a bar one night. I asked her for a slow dance,” Turner said. “And then we’ve been together ever since.”
Turner’s only day off is Sunday. That’s when he gets to spend the most time with his family. He has a 31-year old son and grandson who reside in Bridgeport.
“I’m very dedicated to my family,’ Turner said. “You gotta love your family. If you don’t love your family, then nobody else is gonna love you.”
The pandemic has made Turner more protective of his family. He’s been vaccinated twice himself. He said that he uptick in recent COVID-19 cases has him concerned. “Especially with working and going home,” Turner said. “I want my family to be safe. I’m about to be 60 years of age. I’m trying to live a long time.”
Turner had to quickly end the conversation and continue down Whalley Avenue to catch his ride. He arrived at work around 10:30 a.m. and wouldn’t get off until 5 p.m.
He planned on spending time with his lady once returning home.
“I’m a trooper,” Turner said. “I’m going to get it!”
