Six elementary school students were taken to the hospital after a car collided head-on with their school bus.
The bus was taking students home from Ross-Woodward School on Wednesday afternoon when the crash occurred.
Around 3:45 p.m., the bus was traveling southbound on Middletown Avenue toward Fair Haven when it collided with a northbound vehicle that had swerved into its lane, district officials said in a statement emailed to reporters.
Seventeen students were on the bus at the time, officials said.
After being evaluated at the scene by New Haven firefighters and Yale-New Haven Hospital staff, 11 students were released to their parents and six students were taken by ambulance to the hospital “for evaluation,” officials said.
Superintendent Carol Birks, Ross Woodward Principal Robert Davis, Central Office staff and First Student managers all showed up at the scene. Several of them followed to the hospital “to check on students,” officials said.
The New Haven Police Department is investigating the crash, they said.
