(Updated) The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has determined that married couple Jennifer and Stanley Green died on Thursday morning by homicide and suicide, respectively, as police investigate the two Russell Street shooting deaths as a potential act of domestic violence.
On Saturday morning, a spokesperson for the state Office of Chief Medical Examiner confirmed for the Independent that both Jennifer Green, 52, and Stanley Green, 62, died of gunshot wounds, and that Stanley’s death was by suicide and Jennifer’s by homicide.
That follows Police Chief Karl Jacobson’s statement to the Independent on Friday that police are investigating the Greens’ deaths as a potential act of domestic violence, pending the results of the autopsies, which, per the OCME, are now complete.
New Haven police spokesperson Sgt. Cherelle Carr first announced the deaths of the two Russell Street residents in an email press release on Thursday afternoon .
In that initial press release, Carr wrote that, on Thursday at around 8:16 a.m., city police responded to a residence on the 700 block of Russell Street “on a report of two unresponsive persons who appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds.” Responding officers found and collected a firearm at the scene.
City police, firefighters, and American Medical Response personnel rendered aid to both victims, who were ultimately pronounced deceased on scene. Both victims were transported to the state Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Farmington for autopsies to be performed.
“Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit, Special Victim Unit and Bureau of Identification responded to the scene to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and search for surveillance footage. A resident of the household was present upon officers arrival and has spoke with detectives. Ballistic evidence was found on scene.”
While Carr did not identify the victims by name in her initial press release, Jacobson did confirm for the Independent on Friday that their names are Stanley and Jennifer Green.
Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203 – 946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip-line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).
