At his November swearing-in, Esserman (giving thumbs-up) shared the stage with Assistant Chiefs John Velleca, Tobin Hensgen, Petisia Adger.

New police Chief Dean Esserman has asked his three remaining assistant police chiefs to move on so that he can pick his own team of top aides.

The news spread like wildfire through the department and in the black community Friday following a Thursday afternoon meeting at which Esserman made the request to Assistant Chiefs Tobin Hensgen and Petisia Adger, the department’s highest-ranking African-American.

Esserman made the same request several weeks ago in a meeting with the other assistant chief, Pat Redding.

The fourth assistant chief, John Velleca, retired soon after Esserman took office.

The four assistant chiefs were named less than a year ago by the previous chief, Frank Limon.

The three remaining assistant chiefs did not respond to calls for comment on Friday.

Esserman Friday said he wants to leave it up to the assistant chiefs to announce their decisions about if and when to depart.

I told them I really want to put my team together. I will work with them for a departure date that works for them and that works for the department as well,” Esserman said. I thank them and honor them for their service.”

I would like to pick my own team,” Esserman continued. I have taken the time over the last two months. I did not move hastily. I did not bring anyone from the Providence or New York force with me. Nor will I. But I would like to put my own team together for the new direction we’re moving in.”

Esserman said Redding had a dignified and honorable” response to his request. I would expect nothing less from each and every one of the assistant chiefs.”
