Justin Elicker went as Santa. Toni Harp posed as a “Girl on Fire.”
That’s how New Haven’s two mayoral candidates spent Halloween, just days before they face each other in Tuesday’s election.
Harp stopped by a fundraiser for the Democratic Town Committee at Kudeta on Temple Street. She stopped outside, where her campaign had hired Joe Janike of the Edgewood neighborhood to perform a fire display.
Harp stood by apprehensively as Janike and his assistant put out a flaming prop on the sidewalk. Then she approached the performance area, posing as Janike twirled balls of fire in circles in the backdrop.
“Somebody sing ‘She’s on fire!’” called out campaign manager Jason Bartlett. He began to sing Harp’s theme song, “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys.

Meanwhile, Elicker spent Halloween on the porch of his home on East Rock’s Orange Street, which drew crowds of trick-or-treaters from around the city.
