(Updated: 10:49 a.m.) Lights should go on by 11:30 a.m. for most New Haveners who lost power on the west side of town Monday morning, according to United Illuminating (UI).

Traffic lights went dark, as did homes for blocks around Edgewood Park, after an uprooted tree hit a power line.

The tree fell toward the street by the sidewalk near the pedestrian bridge around 8:30 a.m., according to Officer Miguel Marquez. He and other officers were in the process of blocking off the street to traffic around 9 a.m., and firefighters were checking the scene, as they awaited the arrival of a United Illuminating crew to repair the line.

Homes south of Edgewood Avenue and east of the park lost their power, and the traffic lights along Edgewood went out.

A total of 1,355 customers lost power, according to UI spokesman Al Carbone.

Carbone said that most of those customers’ electricity can be switched to a different circuit, probably before 11:30 a.m.

A few hundred customers will probably need to wait until 2 p.m. to have power resumed because their homes couldn’t be switched, according to Carbone. Those customers live on the streets immediately east of the park, such as Pendleton, Hobart, and Ellsworth.

Update: As of 3:19 p.m., Carbone reported that all but three customers had their power back.
